A Day in the Dhamma

Each day at Mahamevnawa is an opportunity to deepen one's practice. From the early morning hours to the evening, the monastery hums with the energy of mindful living.

5:00 AM — 6:30 AM

Morning Meditation

The day begins before dawn with sitting and walking meditation. This quiet time allows the mind to settle and establish mindfulness for the day ahead. Both monks and lay visitors are welcome to join.

6:30 AM — 7:00 AM

Morning Chanting

Traditional Pali chanting of suttas and protective discourses. The rhythmic recitation calms the mind and fills the monastery with a serene atmosphere. Chanting books are provided for those who wish to follow along.

9:00 AM — 10:30 AM

Dhamma Talks

Daily teachings by the resident monks covering the Suttas, Abhidhamma, and practical instructions for meditation. Talks are given in Sinhala with occasional English translations for international visitors.

3:00 PM — 4:30 PM

Afternoon Meditation

An afternoon session of meditation helps to rejuvenate the mind. Walking meditation along the monastery's nature paths is especially recommended, allowing practitioners to connect with the natural environment.

Evening Chanting & Meditation

The day concludes with evening chanting and a final period of meditation. This is a time for reflection and generating metta (loving-kindness) for all beings.

Residential Retreats

For those who wish to deepen their practice, the monastery offers residential retreats ranging from a few days to several months. Retreatants follow the same schedule as the monks, with additional guidance from senior monastics.

Retreats include intensive meditation, Dhamma study sessions, and opportunities for private interviews with the teacher. Simple accommodation and vegetarian meals are provided.
